Free print tool
Print size and bleed calculator.
Check image detail at the size it will actually print, then calculate the artwork area your bleed requires.
Check effective PPI.
Enter the image width in pixels and the width it will occupy on the finished print.
PPI describes available image detail at this size. The acceptable value depends on the print method, viewing distance and your printer’s specification.
Size the artwork with bleed.
Enter the final trimmed dimensions and the bleed required on each edge.
This is the artwork area, not necessarily the PDF MediaBox. Crop marks can enlarge the PDF page; your finished trim size stays unchanged.
What the numbers mean
Effective PPI is the image’s pixel width divided by its printed width in inches. It falls as you enlarge the image. A 3,000-pixel-wide image printed 254 mm (10 in) wide has 300 effective PPI. Read the effective PPI guide to check cropping, scaling and the exported PDF.
Bleed is added outside the trim on every specified edge. A 210 × 297 mm page with 3 mm on all four sides needs artwork extending to 216 × 303 mm. The printer still trims it to 210 × 297 mm.
Check the job specification
These calculations cannot decide if an image looks good or whether 3 mm bleed is enough for your process. Ask the print provider for its resolution, bleed, safe-area and file requirements.
Read the bleed, trim and safe-area guide or follow the print-ready PDF checklist before output.
